New Faculty Academy: Finding and Reducing Barriers to Learning

Event details Date: Friday, November 6, 2026 Time: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM Location: F0100 College Center About this event In this session, we will discuss two things: 1) Hidden Barriers to Learning. We have all struggled to understand why students miss assignments, don't come to class, procrastinate when taking exams, etc. What if we responded to these ineffective behaviors with curiosity and not judgement? What if we tried to identify a potential situational context that is precipitating these barriers to success? We will explore hidden challenges to success and provide suggestions for addressing them. This book is a useful resource: What Inclusive Instructors Do: Principles and Practices for Excellence in College Teaching. 2) Title IX in 9 : During this nine-point overview of Title IX regulations and the institutional processes for addressing sex-based discrimination and harassment, we will explore when and how to report incidents, support for students and colleagues, and institutional resolution pathways.
