About this event
Biography: Dr. Cheng is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and a physician-scientist studying the molecular mechanisms governing ion channel structure, gating, and pharmacological modulation. My laboratory integrates single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, electrophysiology and other functional approaches with molecular dynamics simulations. We study pentameric ligand-gated ion channels to understand channel activation, desensitization, and regulation by the membrane environment and small molecules, and have more recently established a research program focused on TRPM3, a sensory ion channel implicated in pain and neurological disease. Our research broadly seeks to understand how lipids, drugs, and other chemical perturbations reshape ion channel conformational landscapes and function
