About this event
"Nuclear CSI: The Role of Radiochemical Separations in Forensic Attribution"
Nathalie A. Wall
University of Florida
Abstract: Solvent extraction and extraction chromatography underpin chemical separations across a wide range of scientific and industrial applications, including waste recovery, hydrometallurgy, environmental monitoring, medical imaging, and geological dating. These techniques are equally vital in nuclear science, where they enable the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, the reduction of high-level waste, and a more sustainable use of critical resources. In recent years, the growing field of nuclear forensics has placed new demands on separation science: precise, selective chemical separations are essential for isolating radionuclides and elemental signatures that support attribution, nonproliferation, and national security efforts. This presentation will explore the principles governing these separation methods and highlight the fundamental chemistry that underlies modern nuclear forensic sample analysis.
