Event details Date: Tuesday, October 13, 2026 Time: 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM Location: Native Community Center, Anthony Hall, UC Berkeley Type: Academic Audience: Alumni,Faculty,Prospective Students,Public,Staff,Students About this event David Treuer will discuss his new book, The Savage Mind, which posits that frontier violence, begun as a colonial imperative, became an institutional mission carried out by American institutions, and once manifestation of America’s destiny was achieved, the wave of frontier violence (the theft of Native land and the theft of black and, later, immigrant freedom) broke in two directions. It moved overseas and was expressed in US imperial policy in Cuba, Hawaii, Korea, and Viet Nam. And it moved inwards, into the very cultural fabric and composition of the republic and is re-expressed in the host of problems that beset us today from school shootings to the public execution of American citizens at the hands of the state.
