About this event
As a young girl, France A. Córdova was inspired by the night sky-its immensity, its mysteries, and our fragile place within it. That wonder led her to a career as an astrophysicist and to leadership roles at NASA, the National Science Foundation, and major research universities. Today, Córdova looks upward with growing concern. Just as we have altered Earth's environment, we are beginning to transform the space environment. Satellite mega-constellations are increasing orbital congestion and creating optical and radio interference that threaten humanity's ability to observe and understand the universe.
Córdova’s presentation, “Vanishing Darkness: Preserving Our Window to the Universe,” will explore how we can balance technological innovation with stewardship. Preserving an unobstructed window on the universe is not about resisting progress; it is about ensuring that humanity's expanding presence in space enhances, rather than diminishes, our capacity for discovery.
