About this event
Please note: This program will take place at the JACCC
A broken porcelain plate threaded with gold is at the heart of this wide-ranging conversation between Edmund de Waal and Paul Holdengräber. This is the Japanese art of kintsugi. For de Waal, kintsugi is not repair but a way of recording loss. This is a conversation about return, and how practices of making and writing offer a means of navigating landscapes of memory, memorial, and exile. It will return to de Waal's projects in Paris at the Musée Nissim de Camondo, in the Venice Ghetto, and in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum — and, above all, to Japan, and its influence on de Waal’s ways of looking.
Moveable Feast brings together arts partners and creative voices in conversation to shape collective experiences and deepen our understanding of the world and ourselves through the arts and humanities. This Moveable Feast program is presented in partnership with USC Museums and JACCC as well as the support of Selma Holo and Mei-Lee Ney.
After the conversation, join us for light refreshments in the Japanese garden.
